Lucy Carson Library

The mission of the Lucy Carson Library is to meet the information needs of the campus and the community. The Library is an integral facility to the campus, providing resources, services, and programming to support Experience One in general and specifically to support undergraduate research. 

In addition to providing in-person research assistance and study spaces, the library offers 24-7 online access to most resources including database articles, eBooks, and online research guides.

The facility offers:

• Comfortable and inviting spaces;
• Electronic and print resources to support all curriculum areas;
• Wireless internet access, printing, scanning, and photocopying;
• Frequent information literacy instruction workshops covering topics such as the research process, digital literacy, and citation skills;
• Resource-sharing services that enable students to borrow print or electronic materials that the library doesn’t own;
• A makerspace with educational technology and tools to encourage creativity and enhance course projects;
• Individual reference services;
• Popular fiction, games, and graphic novels;
• Spaces for collaborative group work;
• Spaces for quiet study;

The library faculty members tailor instruction in order to meet the evolving information needs of individuals and courses. The goal of all library staff is to support students with the programming and resources required for success in every stage of their educational journeys, from orientation through graduation.

School of Outreach

The School of Outreach embodies Montana Western’s two-year mission of serving Montana citizens’ to provide a comprehensive, accessible, responsive, student-centered learning environment. Outreach programs extend beyond traditional University course offerings to provide more choices to promote workforce and professional development, and to serve community interests. Credit, non-credit, grant-funded, self-supporting, and sponsored programs are offered at locations on- and off-campus, as well as sites linked by technology. The School of Outreach publishes professional development and personal enrichment offerings three times each year-in July, December, and April, corresponding with the Fall, Spring, and Summer terms, respectively. Outreach offerings are supplemental to campus programs.

Honors Program

The UMW Honors Program gives a limited number of curious and motivated students the opportunity to seek greater challenge through Honors Seminars, select Honors Courses, and major course honors options. The Honors Seminars are small, interactive, interdisciplinary classes, each based on a common theme, rich in reading, writing, and independent projects. The 15 or fewer students in each seminar get to know one another well, engage in service learning activities, and present their work to the seminar, as well as to other audiences. Honors Courses allow students to meet general education or major requirements through a unique course offering that takes a non-traditional approach to a foundational subject. These courses are generally reading and writing intensive.
