ARTZ 249 - Introduction to Glass Kiln Forming 4 Credit(s) Through technical demonstrations and lecture/presentations on historical and contemporary glass, students in this course will learn the fundamentals of glass kiln forming, a category of glass working that includes fusing, pâte de verre (paste of glass), and kiln casting. Drawing and image research will create a basis for student projects that explore color, line and form using sifted glass powders, sheet, and frits. Students will then learn to create sculpted works in kiln cast glass by modeling forms in clay and wax, making investment molds, firing kilns, and finishing glass with lapidary tools and techniques. If time allows, casting with furnace glass may be possible. Assessment of student work will consider depth of research, sketchbook/concept engagement, understanding and control of processes, and presentation. $135 course fee
