Applied Science, BAS

The Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) degree program is designed to allow graduates with an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree to earn a bachelor’s degree with minimal loss of the time spent and credits earned in obtaining the AAS degree. Students may take/apply for one of the AAS degrees at UMW to meet the associate degree portion of the BAS. In most cases, students will need to earn an additional 60 credits beyond the AAS degree. At least 30 credits of the program must be 300- or 400- level courses.

Credit Requirements


Associate of Applied Science: 60 Credits


Earned Associate of Applied Science (AAS) from a regionally accredited institution.

General Education: 16-32 Credits


General Education 

Complete any general education not fulfilled through the AAS degree. Completion of UMW’s General Education Program or completion of the MUS General Education Program or an approved General Education curriculum at another Montana University System campus. General Education courses will transfer on a course-by-course basis if an entire General Education curriculum has not been completed at another MUS campus.

Option Area: 20-28 Credits


Completion of an Option area of 20-28 credits individually designed by the student in consultation with an advisor and approved by the Provost in one of the following areas:

Choose One of the Following Option Area

  • Fine Arts & Humanities (art, drama, English, foreign language, humanities, music, philosophy)
  • Business (business, computer science, economics)
  • Early Childhood Education
  • Health & Human Performance
  • History
  • Mathematics
  • Natural Science (biology, chemistry, geology, physics)
  • Social & Behavioral Science (anthropology, geography, political science, psychology, sociology)
  • Interdisciplinary Core (Approved by student’s advisor)

Electives: 0-24 Credits


Select any college level courses to bring the degree to a total of 120 credits.

BAS Total Credits: 120
